Pre- Recession scenario:
Before 2008 the beauty of the corporate world was very different from present look of it. The business processes and strategies were different; one of the good examples is “Training Strategies” of the corporate world was different from present “Training Policies”. Especially for the MBA graduates it was golden era, as they were treated as domain experts and very less competition was there form other educational streams, like BE or BBA or B.Com.
MBA Candidates used to get recruited as Management Trainee or Asst. Manager for a particular Domain.
Post- Recession scenario:
After the down fall of Global economy in 2008, many companies have changed their thinking process from Domain expert to Business Expert.
Now, what is Business Expert? – A candidate who can bring immediate results, with less training and helps in decreasing the Cost to the Company (CTC).
There are lots of changes in the recruitment strategies too. To maintain a constant growth matrix in the company, recruiting the right person as a Business Expert has become mandatory. Day by day new methods are getting implemented in the recruitment processes. Various types of tests like aptitude, reasoning, verbal, psychometric tests have become the part of any modern recruitment system.
Now days, the competition for a MBA graduate is not only from his/her department or domain; but also from other departments. In many cases during the recruitment of marketing the recruiter will prefer a 2-4 years field experienced BBA/ B.Com over a MBA fresher; as, they can negotiate a low salary package with the BBA/ B.Com candidate and also can expect immediate result from him/her, because of their business knowledge of the field work.
In the case of HR in recruitment profile, companies has started giving preference to the 2-4 years experienced BBA/ B.Com/ BE candidates who are working with various job recruitment consultancies. This is because, they are already well aware of how to handle different job portal and their search keywords; so, there is no need for separate training session for them.
So, a MBA fresher’s who wants to start their career in marketing has to increase their business knowledge to the level of 2-4 years experiences BBA/B.Com candidate. The best way to do that:
1.    Proper Goal setting. This most important part for a MBA graduate. It always good to have a clear idea about, what you want?
2.    Prepare yourselves according to the Goal.
3.    If you want to join in marketing for a Bank then go to that bank brunch, collect their product details, spend some time inside the bank, try to listen and understand how the employees are talking to the walk-in clients or over the phone. Make a note of that and practice.
4.    If you want to have a career in selling software products, go to various software training institute website. Fill up the request form. Let them call you for the training purpose. Talk to them and ask them the question like what would be the benefit of that software course and what is the future of it etc. It will give you enough content to talk about the product during your interview.
5.    Start visiting forums, blogs and social networking sites like Linkedin, siteHR etc. Get involve with the interested community and start talking to them about your goals. Maintain the relationship with the audience.
In the end you have to remember that, Business is all about the common sense.
